Pressure washing or power washing is the growing practice of cleaning using high pressure water spraying. The high pressure water spraying is achieved by specially designed pumps. This type of cleaning is many times more powerful than the pressure that comes out of a typical garden hose. If you choose to use on concrete it removes mold and mildew, bubble gum, and other dirt stains. Also, pressure washing can make wooden decks look like new. Pressure washers are also commonly used by homeowners to improve the appearance of aluminum or vinyl siding by removing pollution, mildew, and other signs of neglect.

Generally the pressure required is based on the cleaning requirements. Think of pressure or the PSI (pounds per square inch) as the cutting of the dirt or material off the surface you are trying to clean. You want to remove the dirt or material but 99.9% of the time you do not want to damage the surface you are cleaning. Preparing the Surface
Before you begin cleaning, thoroughly wet your patio or walkway using a low-pressure spray. This initial rinse acts as a protective barrier, preventing detergent from penetrating the porous brick.

Washing and Spray Pattern
Once the surface is wet, you may begin cleaning. Use a low-pressure setting to spray a generous amount of detergent across the brick. Avoid using the high-pressure setting when spraying detergent, as it can force detergent into the brick, leaving behind a stain. Work in sections for more efficient cleaning.

Applying Detergent
Apply detergent to the section you're working on and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. If the area starts to dry, reapply the detergent as needed. This soaking period helps loosen stains and lift dirt, making the pressure washer more effective.

Rinsing
After allowing the detergent to sit, switch your pressure washer's detergent tank to "Off" and rinse the area. Use a high-pressure spray and begin from the section where you first applied the detergent. Move slowly across 2-3 rows of brick at a time to ensure thorough rinsing. You may need to repeat this process or focus more on areas with stubborn stains.Handling White ResidueYou may notice a white, powdery residue (efflorescence) after the brick dries. Don't worry, this can be removed with an efflorescence remover and a brush. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and avoid using the pressure washer for this step.
